Piperia

T he village is 3 km from Aridea to the baths and until 1998 it was a community and included the small villages of Ano Rodonia and Mikrochori.

It bears this name since 1923. Before it was called Bizio Mahalas and its inhabitants were entirely Turks, but after the Asia Minor catastrophe and population exchange it was inhabited by refugees who came from the coasts of Propontis mainly from the villages of Gonia, Armoutli, Genetz , Skamnia, Triglia, Ayvali, Bursa, Smyrna, Katirli, Safraboli, Antabazar, Artaki, Panormo, Amasa, Vaivouri, Vaiziri, Vaniri, Caesarea, Karaitini, Ortokio, Pouesi, Sarikoi, Sevasteia, Trabzon.

At the same time, some families from the neighboring Loutraki settled in the village. The name Piperia was given to the village by the refugees who were impressed by the many peppers cultivated by the Turks.

The inhabitants of the village were hardworking, peaceful and progressive but also with a mood and fun for parties and countries. The first years faced many difficulties but they arose and developed.

Of course, the refugees, knowing the art of viticulture, brought the first vines in 1923 and since then viticulture is until today a very important production of the village. The first vineyard that was established but no longer exists was opposite the agricultural cooperative.

Other crops in which the village is active are peaches, plums, cherries, asparagus as well as clovers, corn and wheat.

The local agricultural cooperative is very active and exports many of its products, supplies the internal market and promotes them for industrial exploitation.

In the village there is a very important historical relic: the icon of the Assumption of the Virgin of the 12th century which comes from the village of Genze in Panormos Central Asia and was transported here with many dangers by a brave Greek woman “Mariorakena”. The image was miraculous for many years but after 1970 it fell silent. This icon is found in the church of Piperia which was built by the inhabitants from 1953 to 1965.

In the village from the old years was organized the festival of the 15th of August which was the biggest and the most famous in the whole area as it hosted a special miraculous image.

In recent years, the celebration of the Virgin Mary on August 14 and 15 is revived again on the initiative of the local Educational and Cultural Association with the support of the Municipality of Aridea.

Another noteworthy event organized on the penultimate Sunday of November, by the same organizations in the fall is the tsipouro festival. The village produces excellent, pure, traditional tsipouro at a time when adulteration of this product is widespread. So in this festival where tsipouro certainly flows abundantly, accompanied by a variety of delicacies, feasts, local dances, there is a large attendance of people from the surrounding areas and beyond.

Piperia has units that produce tsipouro, pastries, jams, compostes, pickles, pasta. There are 5 tennis courts and a basketball court, where many people play sports from Aridea and beyond. We encourage and invite passers-by to stop in Piperia, to drink their coffee in the cool square with the centuries-old plane trees to chat with the locals and to get their real pure products.
